What Is the Google Local Pack?
When someone searches "dentist near me" or "packers and movers Delhi" on Google, three businesses appear in a box at the top of search results with a map. This is called the Local Pack (or Google 3-Pack).
The Local Pack gets 44% of all clicks for local searches. If your business appears in those three positions, you get a massive share of leads. If you do not appear, most people never scroll down to find you.
Your Google My Business (GMB) profile is the primary factor that determines whether you appear in the Local Pack. This guide shows you exactly how to optimise it.
Step 1: Claim and Verify Your Google My Business Profile
Go to business.google.com and search for your business. If it already exists, claim it. If it does not, create a new listing.
Verification is required before your listing goes live. Google will send a postcard with a verification code to your business address. This takes 5-14 days. In some cases, Google also offers phone or email verification.
Important: use your real business address for verification. If you work from home and do not want to show your home address, you can set a service area and hide your address — but you still need to verify with a real address first.
Step 2: Complete Every Section of Your Profile
Google gives more visibility to businesses with complete profiles. Most Indian businesses fill in only the basic details and leave half the profile empty. That is a mistake.
Complete these sections:
- Business name — use your exact legal or commonly known name. Do not add keywords like "Best SEO Agency Delhi" — this violates Google guidelines and can get your listing suspended.
- Category — choose the most specific primary category that matches your main service. Add secondary categories for additional services.
- Address and service area — fill in your address. If you also serve customers across a region, add your service area cities.
- Phone number — use your primary business number. This is how most local customers will contact you.
- Website — link to your website homepage or a relevant landing page.
- Business hours — include regular hours and holiday hours. Customers check hours before visiting.
- Business description — write 250-500 words describing your business. Naturally include your main services and location. Do not keyword-stuff.
- Services — list every service you offer with a description and price range where possible.
- Attributes — select all attributes that apply (women-led, wheelchair accessible, online appointments, etc.).
Step 3: Add High-Quality Photos and Videos
Google My Business listings with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks than listings without photos. Yet most Indian businesses have fewer than 5 photos — or photos taken with a low-quality phone camera.
Add these types of photos:
- Cover photo — your best photo representing your business (storefront, office or team)
- Logo — clean, clear logo on a white background
- Exterior photos — help customers recognise your location
- Interior photos — show your workspace or office environment
- Team photos — build trust by showing the real people behind the business
- Work or product photos — show your service in action or your products clearly
Aim for at least 20 photos. Add new photos regularly — monthly is ideal. Google notices active profiles and rewards them with better visibility.
Step 4: Get More Google Reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest signals for Local Pack ranking. Businesses with more reviews and higher average ratings consistently rank above competitors with fewer or lower-rated reviews.
How to get more reviews:
- Send a WhatsApp message to recent customers with your Google review link (find it in your GMB profile under "Share review form")
- Add a "Leave us a Google review" link in your email signature
- Put a QR code pointing to your review page at your reception desk or checkout counter
- Ask satisfied clients in person — the best time is right after a successful job or service delivery
Important: do not offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews. This violates Google policies and can result in your reviews being removed or your listing being suspended.
Respond to every review — positive and negative. Responding to negative reviews professionally shows potential customers that you care about service quality. Never argue with a negative reviewer publicly.
Step 5: Publish Google Posts Regularly
Google Posts are short updates that appear on your GMB profile in search results. Most businesses never use them — which is an easy competitive advantage for you.
Post at least once per week. Use Google Posts to:
- Announce special offers or discounts
- Share new blog articles
- Promote upcoming events or workshops
- Highlight a new service or product
- Share a recent customer success story
Google Posts expire after 7 days (except Event posts), so consistency is important. Active profiles with regular posts rank better than dormant ones.
Step 6: Answer Questions in the Q&A Section
Anyone can ask a question on your Google My Business listing — and anyone can answer it. Do not let competitors or random people answer questions about your business incorrectly.
Proactively add the most common questions your customers ask, with your own answers. This shows up in your listing and can be the deciding factor for someone considering your business.
Common questions to add:
- What are your prices / do you offer free consultations?
- What areas do you serve?
- How quickly can you start / what is the timeline?
- Do you offer any guarantees?
Step 7: Build Local Citations
Citations are mentions of your business name, address and phone number on other websites. Consistent citations across directories signal to Google that your business is legitimate and established.
Submit your business to these Indian directories:
- Justdial
- Sulekha
- IndiaMART (for B2B)
- Tradeindia
- IndiaBizNetwork
- YellowPages India
- Yelp India
Make sure your business name, address and phone number (NAP) are identical across all listings. Even small differences ("Pvt Ltd" vs "Private Limited" or "St" vs "Street") can dilute your local SEO signals.
How Long Does It Take to Rank in the Local Pack?
If your profile is currently not ranking in the Local Pack, expect 2-4 months of consistent optimization before seeing results. Factors that affect timing:
- Competition in your area and category
- Age of your GMB listing (older listings rank more easily)
- Number and quality of reviews
- Proximity — businesses physically closer to the searcher rank higher
- Website authority — a strong website with good SEO supports GMB ranking
For highly competitive categories in major cities (doctor in Delhi, lawyer in Mumbai), additional work — citations, reviews and local SEO on your website — will be needed alongside GMB optimization.
