How to Do Keyword Research for Your Indian Business in 2026

How to Do Keyword Research for Your Indian Business in 2026

Why Keyword Research Matters

Keyword research tells you what your potential customers are typing into Google. When you know this, you can create content that answers their exact questions. This is how you get traffic that actually converts into leads and sales.

I have done keyword research for businesses ranging from small local shops to large B2B companies across India. The businesses that succeed with SEO are the ones that understand their customers well enough to know what they search for.

What is a Keyword?

A keyword is any word or phrase that someone types into a search engine. For example:

  • "best CA in Pune"
  • "how to register a company in India"
  • "digital marketing agency Delhi"
  • "cheap web design services Mumbai"

Every search is a potential customer asking a question. Your job is to be the answer.

Types of Keywords You Should Target

Not all keywords are equal. Here are the three main types:

Short-Tail Keywords

These are broad, short phrases like "digital marketing" or "SEO services." They get a lot of searches but also have heavy competition. Ranking for these takes time and authority.

Long-Tail Keywords

These are specific, longer phrases like "affordable SEO services for small businesses in Delhi." They get fewer searches but have less competition and higher buying intent. These are usually easier to rank for and bring more qualified visitors.

Local Keywords

These include a city or region, like "social media marketing agency in Bengaluru." If you run a local business, these keywords are gold. People who search with a city name are usually ready to buy.

Step-by-Step Keyword Research Process

Step 1: Start With Seed Keywords

Write down 5 to 10 basic words that describe your business. If you are a wedding photographer in Jaipur, your seed keywords might be: wedding photography, wedding photographer, wedding photos, bridal shoot.

Step 2: Use Google Autocomplete

Type your seed keyword into Google and look at the suggestions that appear. These suggestions are real searches that people make every day. They are free and very valuable.

For example, if you type "wedding photographer" into Google India, you might see suggestions like "wedding photographer in Delhi under 50000" or "wedding photographer packages India." These are real long-tail keywords you can target.

Step 3: Check the "People Also Ask" Box

When you search for a topic on Google, you often see a box called "People Also Ask." These are questions that real users ask about your topic. Each question is a potential blog post or webpage idea.

Step 4: Use Google Keyword Planner

Google Keyword Planner is free. You just need a Google Ads account to use it. Enter your seed keywords and it will show you monthly search volumes and related keyword ideas. Focus on keywords with decent search volume but lower competition.

Step 5: Look at Your Competitors

Search for your main service on Google and see which websites appear on page one. Go to those websites and look at the topics they write about. What problems do they solve? These topics are likely important keywords in your niche.

Step 6: Use Ubersuggest or Semrush Free Trial

Ubersuggest offers free keyword data for a limited number of searches per day. Semrush offers a free trial. Both tools help you find keyword volumes, difficulty scores, and related keywords quickly.

How to Choose the Right Keywords

When evaluating keywords, look at three things:

  • Search Volume — How many people search for this keyword per month? In India, even 100 searches per month can be valuable if the buyer intent is high.
  • Competition — How difficult is it to rank for this keyword? Start with lower-competition keywords to build momentum.
  • Intent — Why is the person searching? Are they looking to buy, to learn, or to compare? Target keywords with buying or comparison intent first.

Create a Simple Keyword List

Build a spreadsheet with three columns: keyword, monthly search volume, and intent. Aim for a mix of:

  • 3 to 5 high-competition keywords (long-term goals)
  • 10 to 15 medium-competition keywords (medium-term wins)
  • 20 to 30 low-competition long-tail keywords (quick wins)

Start by creating content for your low-competition keywords. As your website grows in authority, you will start ranking for more competitive terms too.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Targeting keywords that are too broad and competitive when you are just starting out
  • Ignoring local keywords if you serve customers in specific cities
  • Creating content without checking if anyone actually searches for that topic
  • Stuffing too many keywords into one page instead of creating separate pages for each keyword
