Keyword Research for Indian Business: Tools, Process and Mistakes to Avoid

Why Keyword Research Is the Most Important SEO Task

Every successful SEO campaign starts with keyword research. Without it, you are guessing — writing content that you think people search for but that nobody actually looks up. With good keyword research, every page on your website targets a real search that real customers make.

I have done keyword research for businesses across India — from law firms in Delhi to Ayurvedic brands in Kerala to IT companies in Pune. The Indian search market has unique patterns that generic keyword research tools often miss. This guide will show you how to do keyword research specifically for Indian businesses.

What Makes Keyword Research for India Different

Indian searchers have specific habits that affect keyword research:

  • Mixed language searches: Many Indians search in Hinglish — a mix of Hindi and English. "Best CA near me Delhi", "GST kaise bhare", "mobile recharge cashback offer" are all real search patterns.
  • City-specific searches: Indian users frequently include their city in searches. "Interior designer Bangalore" is searched far more than just "interior designer."
  • Price-focused searches: Indian consumers are price-conscious. "XYZ service price in India", "cheap XYZ Delhi" and "affordable XYZ Hyderabad" get real search volume.
  • Trust-focused searches: "Best", "top", "trusted" and "certified" appear frequently. "Best tax consultant in India" or "certified digital marketing consultant Delhi."

Step 1: Start With Seed Keywords

Seed keywords are the broad terms that describe your business and services. They are the starting point for your research, not your final targets.

Write down 10-15 seed keywords for your business. For a digital marketing agency in Mumbai, seed keywords might be:

  • digital marketing agency
  • SEO services
  • social media marketing
  • Google Ads management
  • website design Mumbai

These are too broad to rank for directly. But they are the input for your keyword research tools.

Step 2: Use Google Keyword Planner

Google Keyword Planner is the most reliable tool for Indian keyword research because it uses real data from Google Search. It is free to access with a Google Ads account.

How to use it:

  1. Go to Google Ads > Tools > Keyword Planner
  2. Choose "Discover new keywords"
  3. Enter your seed keywords
  4. Set location to India (or specific state/city)
  5. Set language to English (add Hindi if relevant)

This will show you hundreds of related keywords with monthly search volumes. Export the results to Google Sheets for analysis.

Step 3: Filter Keywords by Intent

Not all keywords are equal. Keywords have different intentions — and you need to target the right type for the right page.

Informational intent: "how to do SEO", "what is digital marketing" — people learning, not buying yet. Target with blog posts.

Commercial intent: "best SEO agency Mumbai", "top digital marketing companies India" — people comparing options. Target with service or comparison pages.

Transactional intent: "hire SEO consultant Delhi", "digital marketing agency contact" — people ready to buy. Target with service pages and landing pages.

For lead generation and sales, prioritise commercial and transactional keywords. Informational keywords build traffic and authority over time, which eventually supports your commercial pages.

Step 4: Assess Keyword Difficulty

Not every keyword you find is worth targeting. Highly competitive keywords — dominated by large brands or websites with thousands of backlinks — will take years to rank for. Start with keywords where you have a realistic chance of ranking.

Use these tools to check keyword difficulty:

  • Ubersuggest (free plan available): shows SEO difficulty score from 0-100. Under 40 is achievable for most businesses.
  • Ahrefs (paid): most accurate difficulty score. Shows how many backlinks you need to rank.
  • Moz Keyword Explorer (limited free): shows difficulty and opportunity score.

A simple free method: search the keyword on Google and look at the first page results. If the first page is full of large brand websites (Amazon, Wikipedia, national news sites), it will be very hard to compete. If you see smaller businesses, local sites or even directories, you have a chance.

Step 5: Find Long-Tail Keywords

Long-tail keywords are phrases of 4 or more words. They have lower search volume individually but are much easier to rank for and have higher conversion rates because the searcher is more specific.

Instead of targeting "SEO agency" (extremely competitive), target:

  • "affordable SEO agency for small business Delhi" (less competitive, high intent)
  • "SEO consultant for doctors in India" (very specific, perfect for a niche specialist)
  • "how to improve SEO for e-commerce site India" (informational, easier to rank)

Long-tail keywords are the easiest wins for small and medium businesses in India. Build your traffic with long-tail keywords first, then use that authority to compete for shorter, higher-volume terms.

Step 6: Look at What Your Competitors Rank For

Your competitors have already done keyword research. Use their rankings as a shortcut.

Tools to see competitor keywords:

  • Ubersuggest: enter a competitor domain to see their top organic keywords
  • Semrush (paid): most comprehensive competitive keyword analysis
  • Google Search Console: if you have access to a competitor GSC (you will not) and use it for your own site to find keywords you rank for but are not targeting consciously

Look for keywords where a competitor ranks on page 2 or 3. These are keywords where rankings are possible but the competitor has not fully optimised for them — making them easier to beat.

Common Keyword Research Mistakes Indian Businesses Make

  • Targeting keywords that are too broad: "marketing" or "software" are impossible for most businesses to rank for. Go specific.
  • Ignoring local modifiers: Always check if adding your city to the keyword changes the volume and competition. For most Indian service businesses, city-specific keywords are more valuable.
  • Only targeting high-volume keywords: A keyword with 100 monthly searches but perfect buyer intent is worth more than a keyword with 10,000 monthly searches from casual browsers.
  • Ignoring search intent: Targeting transactional keywords with blog posts (or vice versa) wastes effort. Match content type to search intent.
  • Doing keyword research once: Keyword trends change. New opportunities appear as your business grows and as industry terminology evolves. Review and update your keyword strategy every 6 months.

Build a Keyword Map

Once you have your keyword list, assign each keyword to a specific page on your website. This is called a keyword map. Each page should target one primary keyword and 2-3 related secondary keywords.

Never target the same keyword on two different pages — this is called keyword cannibalization and causes your pages to compete against each other in Google, weakening both.
