On-Page SEO Checklist 2026: 35 Optimisations to Do Right Now

On-Page SEO: The Foundation of Every High-Ranking Page

On-page SEO refers to all the optimisations you make directly on your web pages to help Google understand what each page is about and why it should rank for specific searches.

Unlike off-page SEO (backlinks) or technical SEO (server speed, crawlability), on-page SEO is entirely in your control. You can implement every item on this checklist today without waiting for anything external.

Work through this checklist for every important page on your website — starting with your homepage, then service pages, then your highest-traffic blog posts.

Section 1: Keyword Targeting (5 Items)

1. Primary keyword defined
Every page targets one specific primary keyword. This is the main term you want the page to rank for. Do not target multiple different keywords on one page — it dilutes your focus.

2. Primary keyword in title tag
The title tag is the most important on-page SEO element. Include your primary keyword as close to the beginning as possible. Keep it under 60 characters to avoid truncation in search results.

3. Primary keyword in H1
Your H1 heading should include the primary keyword. Each page should have exactly one H1. Do not use your logo or site name as the H1.

4. Primary keyword in first 100 words
Use your primary keyword naturally within the first paragraph of the page. This signals to Google that the page is clearly about this topic from the start.

5. Secondary keywords used throughout
Include 3-5 related secondary keywords and synonyms throughout the content. Google understands semantic relationships — using related terms helps establish topical depth.

Section 2: Title Tags and Meta Descriptions (4 Items)

6. Unique title tag on every page
No two pages on your site should have the same title tag. Duplicate titles confuse Google about which page should rank for the target keyword.

7. Title tag under 60 characters
Titles over 60 characters get cut off in search results. Check yours in a tool like Moz Title Tag Preview or Google Search Console.

8. Meta description written for every page
While meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor, they appear in search results and influence click-through rates. Write a compelling 140-160 character description that includes your keyword and a reason to click.

9. Meta description includes a call to action
End your meta description with an action phrase — "Learn more", "Get a free quote", "Read the full guide." This increases click-through rates from search results.

Section 3: Headings and Content Structure (6 Items)

10. One H1 per page
Use exactly one H1. Multiple H1s on one page send mixed signals to Google about the main topic.

11. H2 headings for main sections
Break your content into clear sections using H2 headings. Include secondary keywords in H2s where natural.

12. H3 headings for subsections
Use H3 for sections within H2 sections. Do not use headings just for visual styling — use them to create a logical content hierarchy.

13. Short paragraphs (3-4 lines maximum)
Long paragraphs kill readability — especially on mobile. Break content into short paragraphs. Indian readers access content primarily on mobile, making this even more important.

14. Bullet points and numbered lists used where appropriate
Lists are easier to read and scan. They also often get featured in Google featured snippets (position zero). Use lists for steps, features, tips and comparisons.

15. Content length appropriate for the topic
Blog posts: 800-2000 words. Service pages: 400-800 words. Homepage: 300-500 words. Longer is not always better — write as much as the topic requires, not more.

Section 4: URL Structure (3 Items)

16. Short, descriptive URL slug
Good URL: yourdomain.com/on-page-seo-guide — Bad URL: yourdomain.com/?p=1234 or yourdomain.com/on-page-seo-checklist-for-all-websites-2026-complete-guide

17. Keyword in URL slug
Include your primary keyword in the URL. Use hyphens to separate words, not underscores.

18. No stop words in URL
Remove "the", "and", "of", "for", "in" from URLs unless they are essential to meaning. Cleaner URLs are easier for Google to process.

Section 5: Images (4 Items)

19. All images have descriptive alt text
Alt text serves two purposes: it helps visually impaired users understand images, and it helps Google understand what images show. Include your keyword in the alt text for the main image where natural.

20. Image file names are descriptive
seo-checklist-2026.jpg is better than img001.jpg. Rename images before uploading.

21. Images compressed and in WebP format
Large images slow page load time. Compress all images to under 100KB where possible. Use WebP format for 25-35% better compression than JPEG or PNG.

22. Width and height attributes set on images
Setting explicit width and height prevents layout shifts (Cumulative Layout Shift — a Core Web Vitals metric) as the page loads.

Section 6: Internal and External Links (4 Items)

23. Internal links to related pages
Link to 3-5 other relevant pages on your website from every new page. This helps Google crawl your site and establishes page authority hierarchy.

24. Descriptive anchor text for internal links
Use descriptive anchor text, not "click here" or "read more." "on-page SEO guide" tells Google and readers what the linked page is about.

25. External links to authoritative sources
Link out to authoritative sources that support your content. This builds credibility. Add rel="nofollow" to promotional links and rel="noopener" to links that open in a new tab.

26. All links working (no broken links)
Check for broken links using a tool like Broken Link Checker or Screaming Frog. Broken links waste crawl budget and harm user experience.

Section 7: User Experience Signals (5 Items)

27. Page loads in under 3 seconds on mobile
Test with Google PageSpeed Insights. In India, most users are on mobile data — fast load times are essential.

28. Page is fully mobile responsive
Test every page on multiple phone screen sizes. Google uses mobile-first indexing — your mobile version is what gets indexed and ranked.

29. No intrusive pop-ups on mobile
Google penalises pages with pop-ups that cover the main content on mobile immediately after arrival. Use timed pop-ups (after 30 seconds) or exit-intent pop-ups instead.

30. Clear call to action on every page
Every page should have one primary action you want visitors to take. Make it obvious and easy to find.

31. HTTPS enabled
Your site must use HTTPS (secure). HTTP pages receive a "Not Secure" warning in Chrome and rank lower than HTTPS equivalents.

Section 8: Schema and Advanced (4 Items)

32. Schema markup added for page type
Add relevant schema: Article for blog posts, LocalBusiness for service pages, FAQ for pages with questions and answers, Product for e-commerce pages.

33. FAQ section added where relevant
FAQs with schema markup appear expanded in search results, taking up more space and increasing click-through rates. Add 3-5 real questions your customers ask.

34. Open Graph tags for social sharing
Open Graph tags control how your pages look when shared on Facebook, WhatsApp and LinkedIn. Without them, social shares use a random image and title. Add og:title, og:description and og:image to every page.

35. Page indexed and in Google Search Console
Confirm the page is indexed by searching site:yourdomain.com/page-url in Google. If it is not indexed, check for noindex tags, robots.txt blocking or crawl errors in Google Search Console.

How to Use This Checklist

Do not try to fix everything on all pages at once. Prioritise:

  1. Homepage — most visited page, highest authority
  2. Top 5 service or product pages — these drive revenue
  3. Top 5 blog posts by current traffic — leverage existing momentum
  4. All other pages systematically

Run through this checklist quarterly — your pages change, Google requirements evolve and new on-page opportunities appear over time.
