How to Write Blog Posts That Rank on Google and Get Real Traffic

How to Write Blog Posts That Rank on Google and Get Real Traffic

Why Most Blog Posts Never Rank on Google

The internet adds millions of blog posts every day. Most of them receive almost no traffic from Google. The difference between a post that ranks and a post that gets ignored is not writing quality alone — it is the process used before and after writing.

In 8 years of helping Indian businesses with content and SEO, I have developed a clear process for writing blog posts that rank. This guide walks you through every step of that process.

Step 1: Choose the Right Keyword

Every high-traffic blog post starts with a keyword that people actually search for. Write about topics nobody searches and you will rank for nothing. Write about topics everyone searches but with no insight and you will be buried by established competitors.

The sweet spot is a keyword with:

  • Enough search volume to be worth targeting (at least 100 monthly searches)
  • Reasonable competition that a new or mid-authority website can compete for
  • Clear search intent that matches what your article will cover

For Indian businesses, long-tail keywords are often the best starting point. "Digital marketing tips for small business India" is much easier to rank for than just "digital marketing tips."

Step 2: Analyse the Search Intent

Before writing a single word, search your target keyword on Google and study the top-ranking results. Ask yourself:

  • What type of content ranks? (How-to guides, listicles, comparison articles, opinion pieces?)
  • How long are the top-ranking articles?
  • What subtopics do they cover?
  • What questions do they answer?

Your article needs to match the type and depth of content that Google already rewards for this keyword. If all the top results are detailed how-to guides, a short opinion piece will not compete.

Step 3: Research Thoroughly Before Writing

The best-ranking content is the most helpful and comprehensive. Before writing, collect:

  • The main points covered by the top 5 ranking articles
  • Questions from the "People Also Ask" box on Google
  • Related searches shown at the bottom of the results page
  • Your own experience, examples, and insights that competitors have not covered

Your goal is to create content that covers the topic more completely and usefully than what currently ranks.

Step 4: Create a Strong Outline

Write your outline before you start drafting. A good outline includes:

  • Your H1 title (containing the target keyword)
  • An introduction that hooks the reader and states the post value
  • H2 headings for each major section
  • H3 subheadings for subsections where needed
  • A conclusion with a clear call-to-action

A well-structured outline makes writing faster and produces better-organised content.

Step 5: Write for Humans First

Google algorithm has become sophisticated enough to reward content that genuinely helps readers. Write in a clear, direct style that respects the reader time.

Practical writing tips:

  • Use short paragraphs — 2 to 3 sentences maximum
  • Use bullet points and numbered lists for scannable content
  • Use simple language — aim for an 8th grade reading level
  • Be specific and concrete — use real examples, numbers, and case studies
  • Use active voice — "Google ranks faster pages higher" not "Faster pages are ranked higher by Google"

Step 6: Optimise for Your Target Keyword

After writing the article, go back and optimise for your keyword. Place it in these locations:

  • H1 title tag (near the beginning)
  • First paragraph
  • At least one H2 heading
  • URL slug
  • Meta title and meta description
  • Alt text of at least one image
  • Naturally throughout the body text (3 to 5 times)

Do not force the keyword. If adding it somewhere feels unnatural, skip it. Google understands context and synonyms.

Step 7: Add Internal and External Links

Link to 3 to 5 related pages on your own website from within the article. This helps Google crawl your site and passes ranking authority between pages.

Also link to 1 to 2 authoritative external sources where relevant. Linking to government websites, research papers, or established publications signals that your content is well-researched.

Step 8: Optimise Your Title and Meta Description

Your title tag is what appears in Google search results. It needs to include your keyword and give people a compelling reason to click.

Good title structures:

  • [Keyword]: [Specific Benefit or Promise]
  • How to [Keyword]: [Number] Steps That Work in [Year]
  • [Number] [Keyword] Tips for [Target Audience]

Your meta description (under 160 characters) should expand on the title and include your keyword. It is not a ranking factor but it influences how many people click on your result.

Step 9: Add Images and Optimise Them

Include at least one image in your blog post. Compress it to under 100KB to maintain page speed. Write descriptive alt text that includes your target keyword where it fits naturally.

Step 10: Promote Your Article After Publishing

Publishing is not the end. Promote your article to give it initial momentum:

  • Share it on your social media channels
  • Send it to your email list
  • Submit the URL in Google Search Console for faster indexing
  • Share in relevant WhatsApp groups where it adds genuine value
